Standards) and CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) registration for Set Top
Boxes (STBs) is mandatory in India under the Electronics and IT Goods
(Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order. The registration ensures that
the STBs comply with the specified quality and safety standards set by the
government of India. The BIS certification is a mark of quality and safety,
indicating that the product has undergone various tests and conforms to the
specified standards.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requires that all Set Top Boxes
(STBs) used for receiving or decoding any television channel be registered
(BIS). Set Top Boxes must be included in the BIS / CRS Registration System as
per the IS standard, IS 13252 (Part-1). Without a BIS registration, Set Top
Boxes cannot be exported, imported, or sold on the Indian consumer market.
The registration is mandatory for all manufacturers, importers, and
sellers of STBs, who intend to sell their products in India. Without the BIS
certification, the products cannot be sold or marketed in India. STBs are used
to receive and decode television signals from satellite, cable, or terrestrial
sources. They can be connected to a television to enable the viewing of digital
television channels. As STBs have the potential to cause electrical and other
safety hazards, they must comply with safety standards to prevent such hazards.
By ensuring that the STBs sold in India comply with the specified
standards, the government aims to protect consumers from low-quality products
that may be harmful to their health and safety. It also helps to prevent the
import of substandard products into India, thereby promoting domestic
manufacturing and improving the quality of products sold in the country.
