BIS. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) serves as India's National Standard Body, overseeing the coordinated development of standardization, marking, and quality certification activities for goods. If a manufacturer holds a license that is due for renewal but faces financial challenges due to a lack of demand for Standard Marked products, they can request to defer the license's expiry for up to one year by submitting an application at least a month before the renewal date. This request may be granted, with the condition that the manufacturer does not use the Standard Mark on products during the deferred period. Additionally, they must deposit ten percent of the minimum marking fee or rupees seven thousand (whichever is higher) to cover the cost of surprise surveillance. These licenses are categorized as "Dormant" during the deferred period.

The license-holder, the expiry of whose license has been kept in deferment, can apply for the renewal of the license any time within the specified period, following the terms and conditions for renewal, and the same will be accepted. The required fee will be deducted, and 10% of the minimum marking fee or Rs. 7,000, whichever is larger, will be applied. The license will expire on the last day of the designated period if the license holder does not apply for renewal within the allotted time.

 How long is BIS license valid for?

The BIS grants a two-year validity period for its BIS certification. When the relevant items and recommended standards remain unchanged, the makers are eligible to renew their BIS certification. The validity of the renewed BIS certificate is for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years. Manufacturers must get BIS registration (CRS) for some items or BIS certification (ISI) under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) in order to export to India. Which Documents Are Required for Registration with the BIS?

Self-certification is required for any one of the following documents that form the firm: -

A formalized partnership, a company registrar's certificate of registration, or registration under a state government authority The deed, in the case of a partnership firm, OR the certificate from a chartered accountant in the case of a solo proprietorship, is needed.
