Complete information about ISI mark certification

Since 1955, India has used the ISI mark to identify industrial products as meeting standards. The mark attests to a product's compliance with an Indian standard (IS) created by India's national standards organisation, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). In the Indian subcontinent, the ISI mark is by far the most recognizable certification mark. The national standards organisation was formerly known as the Indian Standards Institution, or ISI, before changing its name to the Bureau of Indian Standards on January 1, 1987. Certain goods, including various electrical equipment including switches, electric motors, wiring cables, heaters, kitchen appliances, etc., must bear the ISI mark in order to be marketed in India.

How to Apply for ISI Certification?

The Indian Standard Institute, sometimes known as ISI, is a certification programme run by the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) that is used to confirm that a product is safe for human consumption. Under the direction of the department of Industries and Supplies, the ISI was founded in 1947. The goal of ISI was to establish standards for Indian industries. The stronger Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) took control of ISI in the middle of the 1980s.

The BIS certificate programme strives to give customers a guarantee for the dependability, quality, and safety of the products. The BIS Act of 1986 gave ISI statutory status. Since that time, goods with the ISI mark have been regarded as meeting BIS standards. Medical equipment, batteries, steel items, cement, chemicals, and other product types must all obtain an ISI certification.

After that, the ISI became the BIS. This list includes more than 350 goods, all of which must be BIS certified. Manufacturers and importers who want to register their products with BIS must properly follow the guidelines set forth by BIS, including application filing, product testing, and other requirements.

Products that are BIS-certified:

Businesses can choose to pursue BIS certification on a voluntary basis, but some items are required by law to do so because to concerns about the public's health and safety. About 900 goods are covered by the BIS, which has close to 26500 licensees. The BIS certification is required by the government for around 90 goods. Applications for certification under BIS may also be submitted by foreign and international manufacturers.

Documents that must be provided in accordance with the law:

As with any registration, obtaining the ISI registration requires the production of the following necessary documents:

1.    Address verification for the manufacturing facility or unit

2.    a copy of the factory or company's registration certificate

3.    a properly certified copy of the test results report from the BIS-approved lab

4.    information on the test-related equipment used

5.    Information on the product's packaging, storage options, etc.

6.    design plan for the factory

7.    a duplicate of the certification provided by the governing body

8.    a bank that has been authorised to issue financial statements for the company

9.    Flowcharts or other visual representations of the manufacturing process

10.                        Proof of the applicant's residence in India

11.                        information on the materials used as raw materials in manufacturing

12.                        Recent utility bills, including those for gas and telephone.

13.                        Diagrams showing the products and their individual components

Application for ISI Certification Process:

The applicant who wants to obtain a BIS certification must submit the application, the necessary paperwork, and payment to the BIS. The BIS authorities visit the applicant's premises after receiving the application to inspect the factory. Additionally, they collect product samples, evaluate those samples, and then generate an independent testing report. The provision of the certificate is contingent upon the product meeting the requirements established by the BIS.

To obtain an ISI certification in India, the following steps must be taken:

Step 1: The applicant must create user credentials by logging onto the official BIS website.

Step2:  The applicant must choose the product code as the first and most important step.

Step 3:  The candidate must complete the necessary fields and submit the application. The applicant must pay the audit fees and registration fees in addition to the application.

Step 4: The inspection team from the BIS office will visit the applicant's plant premises when the required fee has been paid to look at the process used to make the product that is applying for ISI registration. The aforementioned product's samples will be gathered and delivered to labs with BIS certification for examination.

Step 5: The inspection team from the BIS office will visit the applicant's plant premises when the required fee has been paid to look at the process used to make the product that is applying for ISI registration. The aforementioned product's samples will be gathered and delivered to labs with BIS certification for examination.

Validity of ISI Registration:

The aforementioned approach results in an ISI registration certificate that is good for a year from the date of registration. After that, the applicant must renew it by paying the requisite renewal price. A chartered accountant should preferably carefully review the renewal application.

Reasons for rejecting an application for ISI registration include:

Only if a certain product complies with the BIS standards is it given the ISI certification. There are some requirements that must be met in order for the certification of the particular product to be granted. The following situations will also result in the application being rejected:

1.    when the applicant submits the application but does not provide samples for testing

2.    If the business or its employees are engaging in misconduct

3.    If the applicant refuses to comply with the BIS inspectors visiting the factory to conduct a survey,

4.    If the business failed to provide the necessary documentation or provided them with insufficient information

5.    If there is a significant difference between the information on the paper and the actual manufacturing site,

6.    If the applicant's workforce is insufficient to continue producing the goods,

7.    If the samples don't meet the testing requirements

8.    If the applicant lacks the necessary facilities to conduct the product testing.
