If the manufacturer is based outside of India, he is needed to name a local representative who can work in the regional market. Geographically, BIS registration for smart watches varies from region to place. In India, the BIS registration process for smart watches is in accordance with IS 13252 (Part1):2010, and it differs significantly from that of a foreign producer.

According to the BIS Act of 2016, the Bureau of Industrial Standards (BIS) was founded. It is an Indian National Organization that monitors the quality of goods made there. The basics of BIS for smart watches

·      A BIS licence is dependent on a few important elements. Without these, no one is eligible to apply for a BIS certification. The items listed below are necessary in order to obtain a BIS for Smart Watch:

·      Manufacturers- A manufacturer must apply for a BIS for a smart watch. Manufacturers are the only ones who can obtain a BIS License. The licence cannot be applied for by importers or sellers.

·      Address of the production facility/office: The manufacturing facility's address needs to be accurate and complete. There must be a separate licence for each location if there are more than two manufacturing facilities for one product.

·      Product to be Sold: Every product that will be sold in India must have a special licence. However, a product that already comprises a number of models can only have one licence or registration number assigned to it.

·      Each trademark or brand is required to have a separate BIS license .

Manufacturer requirements to obtain BIS for Smart Watches

When applying for BIS for a smartwatch, Indian and foreign manufacturers have distinct requirements. The following are the prerequisites for a foreign manufacturer:

·         An Authorized Indian Representative, or AIR, must be chosen by a foreign manufacturer who does not already have a presence in India. Three additional prerequisites are added to the list of requirements for overseas manufacturers:

·         The manufacturer may function as the AIR if they have a branch or liaison office in India.

·         The owner or registered user of the trademark or brand that appears on the goods shall be considered the AIR if the manufacturer does not have a branch or liaison office in India but resides there.

·         The AIR will be a third party if the manufacturer does not have an office in India and the owner or registered user of the brand or trademark is not based in India.

·         The owner of an office in India does not need to appoint an AIR. They can apply directly to the BIS instead.

The paperwork needed to obtain BIS for a smart watch

To receive BIS for a smart watch, a specific set of paperwork must be filed. The records are

·                     Form CDF/CCL (Duly filled)

·                     Application for BIS (Duly filled)

·                     Factory business licence

·                     Application of Business License

·                     ISO certification from the supplier

·                     Letter of authorization

·                     certificate for a trademark

·                     If the maker does not possess the trademark, a trademark authorization letter must be presented.

·                     AIR's nomination letter

·                    ID proof for AIR

·                    Circuit diagram, block diagram, and PCB layout

How to Get a BIS for a Smart Watch

Since May 23rd, 2018, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has mandated that smartwatches be registered in accordance with Indian Standard IS 13252(Part 1)-2010. The process for obtaining a BIS for a smart watch and other similar items involves a number of procedures. The actions are:

·                    An AIR is chosen for the application process in the case of a foreign manufacturer.

·                    The application form must be submitted with the necessary paperwork.

·                    The sample has to be delivered to a lab that has BIS approval for testing.

·                    The test report must be picked up from the BIS lab and delivered to the BIS office together with a copy of the application form, which can be filed online or offline.

·                    The BIS officers check the application.

·                    The manufacturer or his AIR is given the licence when the information is verified.
